In 1941 the United States joined the Second World War following the Surprise Air Attack from the Japanese fleet at the U.S. Naval base Pearl Harbour in Hawaii. It is both a military and ideological investment. Men are called to the front, women stay behind- they have to stand in for men's work in the factories. This situation is called the 'home front' is illustrated by the fictional feminist icon Rosie the Riveter. Rosie comes into the existence of the media(songs, posters) from 1942. She is a woman who wears a red bandana in her hear, she is a strong girl and determined to help her country. We've decided to interest ourselves in this character (her influence on society, on women) since the Second World War until today. Firstly, we've decided to interest ourselves at the birth of this character in order to understand her nature. In the second section, we will question the distribution of the image and the evolution of the role given to American women in America's society in 1936, 1942 and 1950. Within the first two parts we pose the question: is Rosie the Riveter an object of propaganda? Finally, in the last part we will study the use of the icon and the journey it has taken over time.

Propaganda is the more or less systematic effort to manipulate other people’s beliefs, attitudes, or actions by means of symbols (words, gestures, banners, monuments, music, clothing, insignia, hairstyles, designs on coins and postage stamps, and so forth). Deliberateness and a relatively heavy emphasis on manipulation distinguish propaganda from casual conversation or the free and easy exchange of ideas. The propagandist has a specified goal or set of goals. To achieve these he deliberately selects facts, arguments, and displays of symbols and presents them in ways he thinks will have the most effect.”

Il déclare dans son ouvrage Propaganda “ The conscious and intelligent manipulation of the organized habits and opinions of the masses is an important element in democratic society.”. Il déclare désirer "voir que le peuple américain est honnêtement informé" to “see that the American people are truthfully informed”.

Conclusion : Transformation et réalité?

Rosie the Riveter”.

Pourtant, un film comme No Man of Her Own en 1950, laisse entrevoir la possibilité d’un changement.

C'est en 1942, toujours, que la célèbre affiche « We Can Do It » naît.

In this study we sought to better our understanding of the nature of the character Rosie The Riveter and her impact on American society. Rosie The Riveter is not a character merely from propaganda. At the character's birth, it was an artwork. However, in encouraged artists to express themselves amidst a climate of patriotism, so government authorities have encouraged this type of design. The image of women has not been fundamentally changed by this icon. It was created to make the prospect of work in factories more attractive for women. Since 1980 , the image of Rosie The Riveter has been reused, among others, by feminists and political movements and has become a key symbol of American culture.
