Qui est Rosie?

Introduction

In 1941 the United States joined the Second World War following the Surprise Air Attack from the Japanese fleet at the U.S. Naval base Pearl Harbour in Hawaii. It is both a military and ideological investment. Men are called to the front, women stay behind- they have to stand in for men's work in the factories. This situation is called the 'home front' is illustrated by the fictional feminist icon Rosie the Riveter. Rosie comes into the existence of the media(songs,posters) from 1942. She is a woman who wears a red bandana in her hear, she is a strong girl and determined to help her country. We've decided to interest ourselves in this character (her influence on society, on women) since the Second World War until today. Firstly, we've decided to interest ourselves at the birth of this character in order to understand her nature. In the second section, we will question the distribution of the image and the evolution of the role given to American women in America's society in 1936, 1942 and 1950. Within the first two parts we pose the question: is Rosie the Riveter an object of propaganda? Finally, in the last part we will study the use of the icon and the journey it has taken over time. 

En 1941, les Etats Unis entrent en guerre  suite à l’Attaque aérienne surprise de la flotte japonaise sur la base navale américaine de Pearl Harbor à Hawaii. C’est un investissement aussi bien militaire qu’ idéologique. Les hommes sont appelés au front, les femmes restées a arrière doivent remplacer la main d’oeuvre dans les usines. Cette situation appelée the home front est illustrée par l’icone fictive féminine : Rosie the riveter. Rosie apparaît dans les médias (chansons, affiches) à partir de 1942. C’est une femme qui porte son bandana rouge dans les cheveux, une femme forte, une femme déterminée, prête à aider son pays. Nous avons décidé de nous intéresser à ce personnage,( à son influence sur la société, sur les femmes ) depuis la seconde guerre mondiale jusqu’à nos jours. En se demandant de quelle façon elle a influé les femmes pendant la guerre et de nos jours. Nous avons décidé de nous intéresser dans un premier temps à la naissance du personnage pour comprendre sa nature, dans un second temps à sa diffusion par l’image et l’évolution de la place accordée aux femmes dans le société américaine en 1936 et en 1950. Au cours de ces deux premières parties nous nous poserons la question suivante  : Rosie the Riveter est elle un objet de propagande ? Enfin, dans un dernier temps, nous étudierons l’utilisation de cette icône et les sens qu’elle a pris au cours du temps
